As alternative medicine practitioners at Boston Alternative Health, we get a lot of questions about acupuncture and alternative medicine, including Chinese Herbal Therapy. We've addressed some of the most common ones below.

I hate needles! Does acupuncture hurt?

You are not alone! This is probably the most frequently asked question. Acupuncture needles are nothing like hypodermic needles. In fact, you can fit several acupuncture needles inside a hypodermic needle. Plus, the painful part of getting a shot with a hypodermic needle is not so much the needle itself, but the injection of the contents. Most patients don't even realize when an acupuncture needle has been inserted!

What do the herbs in Chinese Herbal Therapy do?

Various plants, minerals and animal products are believed to have specific healing properties. These products are combined together to make a formula specific to each individual's disease pattern. Because the herbal formulas are ingested, the healing properties of the herbs work on a more internal level than acupuncture.

How many treatments do I need until I'm better?

The number of treatments needed varies from patient to patient. Severity of the condition, as well as whether it is chronic or acute all play a part in deciding how many treatments one will need. After careful assessment your practitioner will have a better idea of how long your treatment process will need to be.

What should I wear to an acupuncture treatment?

You are welcome to bring a change of loose-fitting clothing that you feel comfortable in, but it is not necessary. Try to avoid tight-fitting clothing and pants that don't roll past the knees.

  • "I came to see Rebecca for chronic indigestion which I had been suffering with for 9 months. I was taking increasing doses of Zantac but was still feeling badly on a daily basis. I had cut all animal fat, processed sugars and dairy from my diet but nothing seemed to help. Within 6 weeks of herbal therapy with Rebecca I was relieved of all of my symptoms and was able to stop taking Zantac while resuming a normal diet. She has proven to be a thoughtful and caring practitioner, always taking a conservative approach with my treatment. I am deeply grateful for her help and thrilled to have my life back." - L.J., Lexington
  • "I had been suffering from a rare stomach disorder for the last 10 years. I had been to 3 different hospitals in MA, 1 in California, taken a slew of tests, and had been in and out of the emergency room so many times I felt like it was my second home. I would get these attacks of very bad pain in my stomach and non-stop vomiting episodes. I also was suffering from anxiety, stress and insomnia. After losing the battle with traditional western medicines and doctors only giving me quick fixes I decided to try acupuncture. I knew Rebecca was really good from the initial consultation; which was very thorough. I started noticing results around the second week of treatments! And now, I haven’t had any symptoms of my sickness since the treatments which has been going almost a year! Point blank acupuncture works! Not only do I not have any issues with my stomach but I was able to get my life back again! Thanks for giving me my life back Rebecca!" - L.L., Waltham

  • "I used Rebecca’s acupuncture services for a medical complaint, and found it extremely helpful. I was an acupuncture first-timer and very nervous, mostly fearful about the pain of the needles. Rebecca made me feel comfortable by explaining the whole process to me. She was knowledgeable, honest and down to earth, and her confidence and calmness helped me trust her. As a first timer, I asked Rebecca how it worked, and she gave me an explanation from both a western and eastern perspective, which I really appreciated. Her thoughtful demeanor, her listening skills, her willingness to adjust her treatment based on the nuances that I presented all made me feel that I was in skillful and sensitive hands. The results were great. The needles didn’t hurt and I was most pleased that I was able to avoid using drugs to successfully treat my condition." - S.M., Cambridge

In my line of my work, I take self-care very seriously - it is central to maintaining energy and professionalism in my own business - and I'm careful about choosing the right practitioners. Rebecca is extremely knowledgeable, professional and skilled in her craft. She listens carefully, answers questions clearly and creates a comfortable and relaxing environment. • "Recently I injured my back and experienced tremendous pain. After visiting my Primary Care Practitioner regarding my situation I decided to explore acupuncture and the benefits of eastern medicine. My research helped me discover Boston Alternative Health. After my first visit I saw immediate results and began experiencing mobility that I had months before my injury. Rebecca was amazingly attentive and spent a lot of time and energy identifying the root causes of my injury. Her help went well beyond just acupuncture as she introduced me to preventative stretches and other posture techniques designed to reduce the risk of such an injury occurring again. I would recommend acupuncture and Rebecca's practice to anyone who feels as though they have exhausted all efforts in overcoming an injury that continues to hinder them from doing the day to day physical functions they enjoy." - S.V.. Boston
  • "I started seeing Rebecca for my severe chronic migraines. I was at the point where I couldn't get out of bed -- I was bedridden for up to two weeks at a time. Three teams of doctors after multiple ER visits couldn't come up with an effective treatment or explanation, and it got even worse after a botched spinal tap. I was in so much pain, I was willing to try anything. I wish I had gone to Rebecca sooner! Within the first couple of treatments, I noticed a difference. Two years later, my migraines are completely manageable. The treatments themselves are painless and relaxing, and she was extremely helpful in guiding my diet and herbal therapies. I highly recommend Rebecca to anyone who is dealing with chronic pain. You may feel hopeless, like there's no way out, but acupuncture and treatments from Rebecca allowed me to live my life again, and she can help you too!" - E.E., Natick
  • "Rebecca has been treating me with acupuncture for Fibromyalgia and a variety of other health issues since 2009. The regular sessions have really helped to manage the aches and pains that used to keep me stuck in bed and away from work. Rebecca truly focuses on the whole person when treating health issues, and I believe that my overall quality of life has improved dramatically as a result. Rebecca is professional, friendly, compassionate, and has a flexible schedule to accommodate my job. I would recommend Rebecca to anyone who is trying to improve his or her health and reduce stress!" - E. E., Wakefield
  • "I have had such a great experience with Rebecca at Boston Alternative Health. She is very friendly and approachable. She knows what she is doing and seems to take a different approach then other acupuncturists I have seen. I'm being seen for some foot issues that the medical community could not figure out. She has me sit while she puts the needles in specific parts of my hand, then walk to see if the pain has changed at all. She usually needs to do one adjustment and then when I get up the pain is gone. I don't understand it but it works. Then, I lay on the bed and she puts some heat over my feet and leaves the room for a while. She leaves a button for you to press if you have any issues (the only time I pressed it is because I twitched as I was falling asleep, which she says is the main reason it ever gets pressed). The office is very calm, clean and quiet. I feel confident in my treatment here and have already seen results." - S.C., Boston
